Rosnack throws perfection, Poets sweep Tigers

Note: Former LS Jen Luders called the perfect game and caught!

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College softball team belted five homeruns and totaled 22 runs and Jessica Rosnack threw a perfect game in the second game of the day as the Poets earned a sweep of SCIAC rival Occidental on Saturday afternoon.

Rosnack faced 18 batters and sat them down in succession.  She struck out seven and improved to 2-0 in her two starts, with two complete games and a 3.18 ERA.

The freshman hurler was aided by eight hits which includes a three-run, walk-off, homerun by Mary Pacheco in the bottom half of the sixth inning.  Pacheco went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs in the 9-0, Game 2, win.

Amanda Carrasco was perfect at the plate in the night cap of the twin bill as she went 2-for-2 with solo homerun. Jennifer Luders added a deep shot with a two-run blast in the fourth.

Lipperd Throws No-Hitter, Seawolves Sweep Argos

BELMONT, Calif- Freshman Samantha Lipperd tossed a no-hitter in game one and senior Simone Brandalise had five hits on the day as Sonoma State swept Notre Dame de Namur, 9-0 and 8-1, in non-conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon in Belmont. It is the third win in a row for the Seawolves, who improve to 3-1 on the season. The Argonauts fell to 0-2.

Lipperd's no-hitter was the first for Sonoma State since Meegan Kaminaka did so on Apr. 7, 2001 against San Francisco State and it was the 14th no-hitter in the history of the program.

The Seawolves wasted no time in taking the early lead via a RBI single by Brandalise that scored
Danielle D'Eccliss, putting Sonoma State up 1-0. Rochelle Vanyi then came up in the second inning and scored Amanda Myers on a sacrifice fly to give Lipperd a comfortable 2-0 lead after two innings.

Lipperd (2-0) dominated from within the pitching circle, retiring the first seven Notre Dame de Namur batters before Mary Ortega reached base on an error in the third inning. Ortega then got thrown out by
Skylynn Myers trying to steal second base, thwarting any scoring attempt by the Argonauts.

That's when the flood gates blew wide open. Sonoma State exploded for six runs on eight hits, including an RBI triple by
Ashley Britton to give the Seawolves the 8-0 lead. An RBI single by Brandalise in the top of the fifth inning pushed the Seawolf lead to 9-0. Brandalise finished the game perfect at the plate (4-for-4) with a game-high four RBIs.

Notre Dame de Namur threatened in the last half of the fifth inning, as they sat on the heels of the eight-run rule. Lipperd loaded the bases after a couple of walks and a hit-by-pitch but forced Cassie Avila to pop out to
Janelle Arnold to preserve the no-hit shutout. Lipperd, coming off a strong outing against Cal State Stanislaus last weekend, struck out four Argonauts in her five innings of work. Britton added two hits at the plate and brought home two runs for Sonoma State.

Bucknell Softball Announces 2010 Team Captains

Finkel, Okita, Rollandi to Lead Bison in New Season

Nov. 5, 2009

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell softball has named its 2010 captains, head coach Heather Rakosik announced Thursday. Seniors Sherry Finkel (Morgantown, W. Va./University) and Alyssa Okita (Davis, Calif./Davis), and junior Sam Rollandi (San Carlos, Calif./N.D. Belmont) have been tabbed to lead the Bison to their fourth consecutive Patriot League Tournament.

“Alyssa, Sherry and Sam are three very capable leaders both on and off the field,” said Rakosik. “They all bring different characteristics to the table, but the common thread in the trio is that they will work tirelessly to lead themselves and their teammates to a championship.”

The youngest, but certainly not the least experienced, of the captains, Rollandi has amassed a .230 batting average over 55 career games. In two years, the outfielder/second baseman has committed just one error, showing her value in the field as well.

Reyes finished the season with a 17-1 record, including three saves, and an ERA of 2.54 in 215.1 innings, second most in the MEAC.  She was undefeated in conference play with an 8-0 mark, and two saves, and recorded a conference low ERA of 0.36. She led the MEAC in 33 pitching statistical categories including but not limited to saves (3), innings per game (4.68), hits allowed per game (6.73), runs allowed per game (3.58), strikeouts per game (5.53), walks allowed per game (2.11), earned runs per game (2.54) and home runs allowed per game (0.20). Ari hit her first homerun (a grand slam) against Occidental College on March 7th and her team held on to win 5-3. She had an awesome day last Saturday in the Tucson Invitational tournament.  They played two games against teams from New York and Michigan.  Arianna went 8 for 8 with a couple of walks and a triple and 8 RBI's on the day .  I think she batted .667 for the 3 days..She also had a diving catch which she flipped to second base for a double play as well.  As of March 2nd, (last time stats were posted on her school website) she was leading the team in batting average.  I believe she stills is and has raised her average.  It was .324 on 3/2, so her grand slam and Tucson at bats are not included.  She has played every inning so far and starts at Shortstop and bats first.

Chapman picks up six selections to All-Independent team

Michelle Pitts

ORANGE, Calif. - Six Chapman University women's softball players have been named to the Association of Division III Independents All-Independent team. Freshman C Michelle Pitts was named to the first team while five of her teammates were named to the second team.

Pitts led the Panthers in batting (.346), slugging percentage (.469) and doubles (7) and was named the team's Rookie of the Year in 2009. The freshman committed just two errors behind the plate and threw out 33.3 percent (5-for-15) of potential basestealers.

Michelle Pitts - Softball
In the last 11 days, the rookie catcher has raised her batting average nearly 100 points and currently leads the Panthers with a .383 mark. In the last nine games, Pitts is batting .462 (12-for-26) with four doubles. On Thursday, she went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored. She followed that up on Monday with a 2-for-4 performance and her first career home run in the Panthers' 8-7 win over Whitworth College (Wash.). And on Wednesday, the freshman was 2-for-3 versus Hamline
University (Minn.) with an RBI double. She leads Chapman with a .553 slugging percentage and her five doubles are also currently tied for the team lead.

Catcher makes no apologies behind the plate

By IAN LAUSA

Published April 20, 2009

Freshman softball player Michelle Pitts has the tendency to apologize for everything, from dropping a softball at practice, to showing up at a teammate’s dorm room unannounced.

“[Pitts] says ‘sorry’ too much,” said sophomore catcher Jessica Pauletto. “We tell her that she doesn’t have to apologize for everything. She is getting better.”

There is no reason for the freshman catcher to apologize for her performance on the softball team this year. Pitts has improved her hitting in her rookie season to become an anchor in the batting order. She leads the team with a batting average of .362, a figure that she raised nearly 100 points in nine games in a span of 11 days after gaining some confidence and working on her pitch selection, she said. She also leads the team in slugging percentage with .493 and is tied with teammate senior outfielder Erin Dudzinski for the most doubles with six a piece.

“[Pitts has] taken a good freshman role,” said head coach Janet Lloyd. “She’s done what she’s supposed to do, followed the rules, and now she can slowly move up in the ranks.”

“Part of the problem [this season] was that people peaked at certain times and we weren’t peaking as a team,” said Pitts. “Combined, no one did extraordinarily well. But that’s easily fixable. It’s just a matter of having confidence in each other.”

This season there has also been an issue of confidence in her own hitting ability, said Pitts.

“[Earlier in the season] I was nervous and I wasn’t hitting well,” she said. “I had to tell myself that I have a team behind me to help me out.”

Coming onto the field as a freshman can be difficult but Pitts has integrated herself into the team well, according to Lloyd.

“A lot of people come into this program and don’t have a chance to play because we have a good team,” said Lloyd. “She worked her way into the starting lineup and has been starting every game.”

Her abilities as a catcher and her hitting prowess have made Pitts a formidable talent on the team, according to freshman infielder Carly Foerster.

“She’s a solid player,” said Foerster. “She’s been consistent throughout the season both behind the plate and at bat.”

That consistency has been welcome in such an inconsistent season, according to Pauletto.

“We can count on her for hits and a lot of RBIs,” said Pauletto. “There isn’t a particular area that she is lacking in. She’s a very well-rounded player.”

The team has helped Pitts balance her schoolwork as a business major with her sport, she said.

“I wanted to play at a school that was competitive [in softball], but I also wanted to be here for academics,” said Pitts. “If I ever need help, I just call up one of [my teammates].”

That closeness between teammates has been an aspect of the game that Pitts has always liked, she said.

“[Success] doesn’t rest on just one person’s shoulders it rests on the entire team’s,” she said

Centre Softball Team Looks to Continue Winning Ways in 2009

2008 Centre College softball team continued the Colonels recent success winning 22 games and making it all the way to the SCAC tournament semi-finals.  In 2009, Centre will look to continue winning ways while working towards a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship.

The 2009 Centre softball team will lack inexperience, with only two seniors and one junior on the roster, but will compensate for the lack of experience with talent.  Associate Head Coach Chris Mason said, “Despite us being a young team, we are extremely excited about the upcoming year.  We might not have a lot of upperclassmen but the freshmen and sophomores on the team are willing and capable of producing an excellent effort on the field.”
Freshmen players that the coaching staff feels might have a chance to make a strong impact this year include:
Regina Sena, Elizabeth Fenwick, Catelyn Teague and Cailynn West.  Sena will split time with Rhule behind the plate and likely see some playing time in the outfield as well.  Fenwick will step in at shortstop for the Colonels and look to solidify the infield defense.  Teague will join Jones in the Colonels pitching staff.  West will be asked to provide a strong bat in the middle of the order while playing mostly at first base.

                                  ALEX CHANG-GRAHAM

                               Conference pitcher of the week

Alex Chang-Graham Named NESCAC Pitcher of the Week
Chang-Graham
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College junior Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) has been named the NESCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second time of her career, as she was named this week’s honoree for leading the Lord Jeffs to a pair of victories over Westfield State College.

Amherst’s ace played a vital role in each of Amherst’s wins last week. After picking up a complete-game victory in game one of the Westfield State doubleheader, during which she allowed only two hits in 8.0 innings, Chang-Graham made a stellar relief appearance in the nightcap. With runners on second and third and only one out upon her entrance in the sixth inning, she got out of the jam unharmed and retired all five batters she faced in the game to pick up another win.
Chang-Graham has made an appearance in each of Amherst’s past five games, posting a 3-0 record with a 0.44 earned run average during that time. In her past 20.1 innings pitched she has allowed only one earned run while holding opponents to a .183 batting average, striking out 14 and walking only three.

Chang-Graham’s career-high 11 wins are tied for the second most in the NESCAC, while she leads the conference in innings pitched (87.1) and is second in strikeouts (58). After leading the conference in ERA last season (1.65), she is currently third in the category (1.36) and is fourth in opponents’ batting average (.213).
